UIA CONGRESS

The bâtonnier Georges-Albert Dal attended on 30 June the Council of the International Union of Lawyers (UIA) in New York. He presented a text setting out the core principles of the legal profession, which was adopted with a view to its presentation to the General Assembly of the next UIA Annual Congress to be held in Porto from 30 October to 3 November next.

STATE AID CONTROL

On 19 June Carole Maczkovics, partner in European law, competition and regulation, spoke at our last Breakfast about State aid control. The presentation answered the question whether State aid control can be used as an efficient tool to promote competition. It covered the concept of State aid and its legitimacy, as well as national and European State aid law enforcement, focusing in particular on the recent judgment of the Brussels Court of first instance in the Bruxelles-Propreté case. NEW MEDIATION RULES

On June 19, in the scope of an event co-organized by DALDEWOLF and CEPANI 40, Patrick Van Leynseele presents the new rules adopted by the Belgian parliament on June 7 concerning mediation. Among other things, the powers granted to the judges to order parties to attempt to settle their dispute through mediation, are significantly increased.
